“Business people” always seemed like a mystery, completely outside my realm of familiarity. Watching them interact with each other was like watching exotic mating rituals on the discovery channel. But RocketDog is full of business people, and interestingly enough, I’ve found that they’re not particularly complicated. Good business people have three qualities regardless of any others: persistence, people skills, and common sense.
Concept isn’t always king
Everyone loves a clever idea, a pun or cultural reference that makes us feel like we’ve really hit on something that will convince everyone of our brilliance. Sometimes though, the more appropriate solution is much simpler and straightforward, sometimes the “concept” is showing product in a way that makes me want it.
I am a team player
By trusting others I opened myself up to hearing what they were really saying and letting it influence my thoughts and ideas. Oftentimes this exchange resulted in innovations that otherwise wouldn’t have come about.
I can trust others
I’m a perfectionist and a generalist. Both of these things led me to believe my preferred way of working on a project was from start to finish. I thought I needed to control everything in order for it to be done right. I learned however, that if you are surrounded by competent people who are good at what they do it will get done right, and in most cases, better than any one person could ever to it. And doing so allows you to concentrate on the portion of a project that you really love.
