I considered being an English major…
Over the last couple of years I’ve gotten to really enjoy writing copy for my various projects. I’ve written everything from the preliminary copy for the back of FritoLay potato chips, to conceptual pitches in an attempt to get work, to brand guidelines for Microsoft. I’m not a grammar nazi. I put a bit of effort into getting it right, but only a bit. So don’t take this as a statement that I am better at English that you, or anyone. For major clients, I’ll always send it through a real copywriter and we’ll argue about things for awhile ;)
I am pretty good at being honest, at speaking my mind. Communication is hard, and I think despite any failings within my interpretation of the English language, you’ll learn that I manage to accurately describe the heart of a thing. And that’s it, that’s all I do, and it’s a great time.
Why didn’t I become an English major? Because I don’t care about saying it perfectly. I’m more interested in the ideas than the structure (past a point). I think it’s better to say something brilliant in a grotesque way than to say nothing worthwhile with grace.
